* * * *

Thorne sat in the oak grove after dinner, waiting for Stefan to join him. When they’d set out that morning, he’d actually thought that, if they happened to meet Ramsey, the other man might give Thorne a good place to start tonight’s discussion. But now, he didn’t really want to bring Ramsey up. Stefan had no reason to be jealous, but Thorne kept thinking back over the past few months, wondering if Stefan had seen something he’d been blind to. He kept thinking of the conversations he’d had—or rather had tried to have—with Ramsey. It made him worry that he had failed Ramsey in a different way than he’d originally thought.

Stefan came up and sat beside him. “You look thoughtful. Still stunned after what I did to you earlier?” Stefan whispered playfully.

Thorne turned to him and smiled. “You were more aggressive than I expected.” He settled back against the tree. “No, just thinking through something. Trying to work it out.”

“I know this is our first time really talking about Jalal’s story, but I’m feeling pretty open minded. We can talk through it.” He grinned. “I won’t be too hard on you.”

Stefan had given him the perfect opportunity to avoid talking about Ramsey, yet Thorne didn’t want to hide anything from him. “I was actually thinking about Ramsey. If he does have feelings for me, then that stuff is getting jumbled up with everything else.”

“That worry you?” Stefan pulled his legs to his chest and rested his chin on his knees.

“It does if it’s true. That would mean I’ve been missing a big piece of the puzzle as I try to help him.”

“I didn’t mean to worry you, but seriously? That man feels something for you. I guess it could be confusing him. Was he religious before?”

“In his own way. A priest of Vena married his parents, but he used to come to the temple often. He’s quite the scholar, actually, though I don’t know that I’d call him devout.”

“Some people maybe can’t reconcile it? A priest who can have a lover and get married. Have children and all that.”

“I assumed he’d come running to the temple because the healers weren’t optimistic. But maybe he was coming to me as much as he was coming to Jalal.”

“But then he changed after his parents died?”

“Yes. He’d leave the room whenever I came around. We didn’t even have a proper conversation until a few months later when Mary found out she was pregnant. She began visiting the temple and grove more often, but he wouldn’t come with her anymore. I went to see him, but he acted just like he did today. Distant.”

“Then maybe I’ve made a mistake. Worried you for nothing.”

“We’ll see. You shouldn’t feel bad for saying something. I want you to tell me everything you’re thinking.”

“Everything, huh?” Stefan said with a grin.

“Of course.” Thorne smiled, settling back again and clasping his hands in his lap. “Let’s get on with our discussion. Ask away. Anything.”

“I read the passages you told me about.
